After months of relative calm, COVID-19 has begun to re-emerge in West Bengal. According to the latest bulletin released by the state’s Health and Family Welfare Department on Wednesday, 60 new cases were detected in the past 24 hours.
This new surge has pushed the total number of active COVID-19 cases in the state to 432. While the spike may not seem alarming compared to previous waves, the sudden uptick in daily numbers is being closely watched, especially in urban pockets like Kolkata.
In the same 24-hour period, 28 patients were reported to have fully recovered from the infection, according to the Union Health Ministry. Thankfully, no new deaths were recorded during this window, and the state’s overall COVID death count remains at just one for the year.
However, that one fatality — which occurred a day earlier — has become a cause for concern. The victim, a resident of Kolkata, marked the first COVID-related death in Bengal this year, bringing the virus back into public attention after months of low-key reporting.
With the virus showing signs of revival, Bengal may be at the beginning of another seasonal wave. Authorities are monitoring the situation closely and may soon consider reintroducing some preventive guidelines to curb the spread before it escalates further.
