A powerful cyclone swept through parts of Jalpaiguri district late last night, leaving a trail of destruction in the Vaidya Ashram Pada locality of Bargharia in the Dhupguri subdivision. Several families had close escapes as trees crashed onto their homes, causing severe damage. In one case, a tree fell directly on a bedroom just minutes after the family rushed out on hearing a loud crash.
The storm hit suddenly, and many residents remained outside in the pouring rain through the night, helpless and fearful of further damage. Locals described the experience as terrifying, with strong winds tearing through the area and widespread panic among residents.
In addition to damaged homes, several electric poles and trees — including betel and shimul — were uprooted, creating dangerous blockades and increasing the risk of electrocution. The area continues to remain partially disconnected due to fallen power lines.
As of now, the affected families are looking toward the administration for immediate assistance in restoring power, clearing debris, and providing basic relief materials. No casualty has been reported so far, but the damage to property is significant.
