The Calcutta High Court has granted interim bail to 22-year-old law student and social media influencer Sharmistha Panoli, who was arrested for allegedly hurting religious sentiments through a video related to Operation Sindoor. She was arrested by Kolkata Police from Gurugram and brought to Kolkata for questioning.
The court allowed Panoli bail on a personal bond of ₹10,000 and directed that the investigation related to the FIR at Garden Reach police station will continue. However, all other FIRs filed in connection with the video have been put on hold until further notice.
Sharmistha had posted a video on Instagram that was alleged to be derogatory towards a specific religion. The video, linked to the sensitive Operation Sindoor, had sparked outrage online. However, she later deleted the content and issued a public apology on May 15, acknowledging the backlash.
The High Court also directed the West Bengal government not to file any fresh FIRs on the same matter and asked for the case diary to be presented at the next hearing scheduled for June 5.
