Self-help group leader in Nadia accused of disappearing ₹5 lakh and documents

A serious allegation of financial fraud has emerged from Fulia in West Bengal’s Nadia district, where the leader of a women’s self-help group has allegedly disappeared after misappropriating ₹5 lakh and important bank-related documents.

The self-help group, named Navarsha Svanirbhar Goshti, is managed by local women to support community development. According to members, the group’s Sabhanetri (head), Baishakhi Adhikari, has gone missing and switched off her phone. Efforts to contact her have failed, raising suspicions among the group.

Tensions escalated when members requested access to financial records, which were allegedly denied by three women from the controlling class committee of the group. The members claim that the bank books and related accounts have been blocked, preventing any further transactions or audits.

Frustrated and anxious, the affected women have approached the local police station and filed a formal complaint. The case has triggered demands for transparency and stricter oversight in the functioning of self-help groups in the region.
