In a fresh crackdown on illegal arms near Kolkata, airport police have arrested a notorious criminal from the Ganganagar Bazaar area. The accused, Sudipta De alias Kanai, a resident of Howrah, was apprehended late Thursday with a one-shutter pistol and two rounds of live ammunition in his possession.
According to police sources, Sudipta had long been active in criminal activities across New Barrackpur, Madhyamgram, and the Dumdum Airport zone. He has a long-standing record with several criminal cases registered against him in the past.
The arrest took place during a targeted police operation based on prior intelligence inputs. Officials at the Airport police station confirmed that Sudipta will be presented in Barasat Court, where they will seek police remand for further interrogation into his arms network and possible associates.
The police have launched a detailed investigation to uncover the origin of the recovered weapon and whether more people are involved in this illegal arms trade operating in the region.
