Digha to host its first Rath Yatra with grand Jagannath chariots and ‘golden broom’ tradition

For the first time ever, Digha in West Bengal is preparing to witness the historic Rath Yatra of Lord Jagannath, echoing the grandeur of Puri’s world-famous celebration. The wheels of the sacred chariots of Lord Jagannath, Balabhadra, and Subhadra Devi will roll through Digha’s streets, marking a new chapter in the coastal town’s spiritual and cultural legacy.

The festival will commence from the newly inaugurated Jagannath Dham temple, which opened just a month ago. In a major highlight, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee will inaugurate the event. In keeping with the Puri tradition, the ceremonial path will be sanctified with the symbolic ‘Sona Ki Jhadu’—a golden broom—before devotees begin pulling the three massive chariots.

The three chariots—Nandghosh, Taladhwaj, and Devdalan—each fitted with 36 wheels, have been specially crafted for the occasion. With thousands of devotees and tourists already arriving in Digha, authorities are working round-the-clock to ensure security, crowd management, and infrastructure readiness for this landmark celebration.
