Trinamool Mahila Morcha staged a protest rally in Kolkata on Friday against alleged derogatory remarks made by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders targeting Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. The demonstration highlights the escalating war of words between the state's two dominant political forces.
The protest rally, led by the President of the TMC women's unit and State Finance Minister Chandrima Bhattacharya, commenced from Triangular Park and proceeded to Hazra More, covering a distance of approximately 2.4 kilometers. Throughout the rally, members of the TMC Mahila Morcha chanted slogans, condemning what they described as a "continuous derogatory campaign against a democratically elected woman Chief Minister."
Speaking at the rally, state minister and TMC leader Shashi Panja asserted, "The BJP and its leaders are leaving no stone unturned to demean Mamata Banerjee. Insulting Mamata Banerjee is an insult to every woman in the state. If they cannot fight politically, they should not resort to such cheap and defamatory statements." Her comments underscore the TMC's stance that the BJP's rhetoric has crossed acceptable political boundaries.
The TMC alleges that the BJP leaders' controversial remarks came after Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's sharp reaction to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's recent speech in Alipurduar. During his address, PM Modi had reportedly targeted the TMC government by mentioning 'Operation Sindoor'. This reference, which alluded to India's retaliatory action against terrorist hideouts in Pakistan following the April 22 terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, killing 26 people, seemingly triggered the latest verbal exchange.
