South Bengal is expected to witness rising temperatures and extreme humidity for two days, with relief likely from Wednesday evening. According to a Monday morning weather bulletin, the temperature will gradually rise across the region on Monday and Tuesday. Along with the heat, humidity levels will remain significantly high, particularly in the coastal districts.
In Kolkata, the maximum temperature on Monday was recorded at 35°C, which is 0.2°C below the seasonal average. The minimum temperature was 29.1°C, 1.9°C above normal. Humidity reached up to 94%, contributing to severe discomfort and sticky conditions throughout the day. Some parts of coastal South Bengal received light rainfall on Sunday, but it was not sufficient to ease overall conditions.
A change in weather is likely from the evening of 11 June. Thunderstorms with gusty winds and rainfall are predicted in several districts including North and South 24 Parganas, East and West Medinipur, Murshidabad, and Nadia. From 12 June, light to moderate rainfall is expected to spread across most districts of South Bengal, including Kolkata.
Forecasts suggest that the southwest monsoon may enter South Bengal between 15 and 19 June. This phase is likely to bring increased cloud cover and more widespread rainfall. In North Bengal, especially in hill regions such as Darjeeling, isolated thunderstorms and scattered showers are expected in the coming days. However, there is currently no indication of heavy rainfall in any North Bengal district.
The western districts of the state are expected to remain dry and hot till Tuesday, while coastal districts will continue to experience oppressive humidity. From midweek, conditions are projected to become more favorable with an increase in rainfall activity across South Bengal.
