A tragic case of student suicide in Navi Mumbai has sparked outrage and legal action after a first-year BSc Nursing student from a Scheduled Caste background allegedly ended his life following sustained caste-based abuse. The 19-year-old, a native of Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar in Maharashtra, was found hanging from the window grill of his hostel room on June 3.
According to the FIR filed by the student’s mother, the principal of the private nursing college in Poyange village, Panvel, repeatedly used casteist slurs and publicly humiliated her son. The complaint alleges that the principal also made degrading remarks about the student’s masculinity, pushing him into emotional distress.
The Panvel Taluka police have registered an FIR under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for abetment of suicide and intentional insult, along with provisions of the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. No arrests have been made so far, but authorities are actively recording witness statements and collecting evidence.
This incident has reignited concerns over caste-based discrimination within educational institutions, with calls for stronger safeguards and mental health support for students from marginalized communities.
