DNA results to identify Air India crash victims expected within 72 hours, says official

The identification process for victims of the deadly Air India crash in Ahmedabad has been accelerated, with DNA results expected within 72 hours. Authorities have collected 275 samples from the remains found at the crash site, including disintegrated body parts, and sent them to forensic labs in Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar for urgent testing.

Dr. Saumil P Merchant, who is overseeing the process, said DNA tests typically take months but have been fast-tracked due to the scale of the tragedy. Families of the deceased have been arriving at the Civil Hospital, where a hall was converted into a sample collection centre overnight.

The crash claimed 241 lives, including 169 Indian nationals, 53 British, seven Portuguese, and one Canadian. Only one passenger survived. Given the charred condition of most bodies, DNA testing is currently the only reliable identification method.

Union home minister Amit Shah has assured families that the final toll will be confirmed only after DNA identification is completed, and officials expect that body handovers could begin as early as Sunday.
