A devastating fire engulfed approximately 20 shops in the Pakuhat area under the Bamangola police station in Malda district on Sunday, causing widespread panic and significant damage. Preliminary reports indicate the blaze originated suddenly from a nearby garbage heap, rapidly spreading to the temporary shops within the market area. Eyewitnesses reported a substantial pile of garbage near the shops, which unexpectedly ignited.
Local residents immediately rushed to the scene and attempted to douse the fire using water from a nearby submersible pump, even before the arrival of the fire brigade. Despite their efforts, the flames rapidly spread. Shopkeepers expressed considerable anger and frustration, claiming that while the fire department was informed promptly, their delayed arrival allowed the fire to consume most of the shops, leading to extensive losses.
The incident has sparked public outcry over the response time of emergency services in the rural locality. While the material damage is severe, it is a matter of relief that no injuries have been reported in the incident. Police and local administration have initiated an investigation into the matter to ascertain the exact cause of the fire and the factors contributing to its rapid spread and the extent of the damage.
