Teen dies by drowning in Rabindra Sarobar lake sparking questions on safety, civic negligence

A 16-year-old boy tragically drowned in Kolkata's Rabindra Sarobar lake on Sunday morning, raising serious concerns over public safety and civic oversight. The deceased, identified as Shivam Singh, was a resident of Ballygunge Place in the Gariahat area of South Kolkata.

According to locals, Shivam had gone for a morning walk and, like several others, entered the lake for a swim. Witnesses say he ventured deep into the water but did not resurface. Despite desperate rescue efforts, his lifeless body was recovered hours later.

The incident has reignited criticism of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation and police authorities, who have been accused of ignoring repeated warnings about unrestricted swimming in the lake. Locals allege there is no regular surveillance or signage to deter people from entering the water.

This tragedy, coming during a weekend when the area is typically crowded with visitors, has left the community shaken and once again put the spotlight on the lack of preventive safety measures at popular public spots in the city.
