South Bengal gets new rail connectivity: Purulia-Bankura-Howrah MEMU service inaugurated today
A fire started last night close to 10:00 pm in Tower 3 of The Empire Building at 16A Gurusaday Road, a premium Kolkata residential address. Even though there were no casualties the incident has raised some serious questions about just how well prepared high-end residential complexes are for safety.
"The fire alarm was faulty, security personnel were unequipped, untrained, residents upstairs were trapped for almost three hours" said a building resident.4 Fire ENgines brought the fire under control around 1.30AM. All the 3 towers were evecuated but for the 2 unaffected towers residents were allowed to go in around midnight.
Fire started in an empty flat on 5th floor where some repair work was going on. Karaya Police & Fire brigade are investigating the cause of fire.
In some of Kolkata’s most premium buildings, safety often takes a back seat to aesthetics. This incident does underline the truly alarming lack of emergency readiness at these highrise residences.
