In a major push for healthcare accountability, the West Bengal Assembly on Tuesday passed the Clinical Establishment Amendment Bill with a strong majority. The bill aims to rein in irregularities and unchecked pricing practices in private hospitals across the state.
The state government claims this is the first law of its kind in the country that places power directly in the hands of the patient. It seeks to regulate arbitrary billing, package systems, and treatment-related exploitation in private healthcare facilities.
Minister of State for Health, Chandrima Bhattacharya, hailed the legislation as historic. “No patient will be helpless for treatment in a private hospital anymore,” she said, emphasizing that the bill marks the beginning of a new revolution in Bengal’s healthcare system.
The move is being seen as a significant step towards making private hospitals more transparent, patient-centric, and accountable. With this, the Mamata Banerjee government aims to build trust between patients and healthcare providers while strengthening state oversight.
