A BJP leader was found dead under suspicious circumstances at his residence in Hooghly district’s Goghat area on Saturday morning. The deceased, Sheikh Bakibullah, was the Mandal President of the BJP Minority Morcha in the region. His body was discovered hanging from the first-floor verandah of his house in the Sanbandhi locality, with both hands tied together with rope in front. Family members were the first to spot the body and immediately raised an alarm.
Local residents gathered at the spot after news of the incident spread. Police from Goghat police station arrived to recover the body but reportedly faced resistance from the assembled crowd. The body was later recovered and sent for post-mortem examination. As of now, the identity of any potential suspect or motive behind the incident has not been confirmed by the police. An investigation has been initiated.
Family members of the deceased have alleged that Sheikh Bakibullah was murdered and then hanged to make it appear as suicide. They claimed he was targeted but did not name anyone specifically. According to their statements, the condition of the body—especially the tied hands—has led them to believe that the death was not self-inflicted.
Political leaders from different parties have reacted to the incident. Purshura MLA Biman Ghosh stated that the BJP leader was murdered for political reasons. The Trinamool Congress has also demanded a thorough investigation into the incident. Police officials have begun questioning family members and local residents to gather more information.
