A fishing trawler carrying 11 fishermen sank on Saturday near Jambu Island in the Bay of Bengal. The vessel had departed from Das Mile Kheghat in Namkhana, South 24 Parganas, for a routine fishing expedition. The incident occurred while the trawler was engaged in fishing activities in deep sea waters.
Local sources stated that the lower part of the trawler broke due to strong waves, causing seawater to flood the vessel. As the trawler began to sink, the fishermen alerted nearby trawlers and jumped into the sea. Responding quickly, other trawlers operating nearby reached the spot and rescued all 11 fishermen from the water.
The rescued fishermen are being brought to shore for medical treatment. Efforts are ongoing to tow the sunken trawler back to land with the help of another vessel. No injuries or fatalities have been reported so far.
