Fire guts former Minister John Barla’s Banarhat house; No injuries reported

A fire broke out on Saturday afternoon at former Union Minister John Barla’s old wooden house in Lakshmipara Tea Garden, Banarhat, Jalpaiguri. Local sources said children were playing on the ground floor when the fire started, but all were safely evacuated.

Residents quickly responded and managed to control the flames before a fire engine from the Birpara fire station arrived. Barla’s new house, located adjacent to the structure that caught fire, remained undamaged due to timely intervention. However, the old house was severely damaged.

The cause of the fire is yet to be confirmed, and further assessment of damage is awaited. Reacting to the incident, Barla said, “The house that caught fire was my old house. I have many memories associated with it. I began my political journey there. It saddens me deeply.”
