Two brothers died and one person was seriously injured while cleaning a toilet tank in the Sukantapalli area of English Bazar, Malda. The incident occurred while the three labourers were working inside the tank and lost consciousness, reportedly due to exposure to toxic gas.
A piece of shuttering wood also fell inside the tank during the incident, worsening their condition. The deceased have been identified as Ujjal Mandal and Asit Mandal. The injured worker, Vishwajit Mandal, was rescued in an unconscious state and admitted to Malda Medical College, where he remains in critical condition.
All three were engaged in construction work when the incident took place. Police have started an investigation and are questioning the house owner. Local councillor Chaitali Ghosh Sarkar visited the site. The bodies of the deceased have been sent for post-mortem examination.
