The West Bengal government may soon announce a hike in Dearness Allowance (DA) for state employees and pensioners. Sources indicate that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is likely to make an official statement on the matter next week. The issue has been under discussion at the state secretariat 'Nabanna', where a series of high-level meetings were held this week to assess the financial impact and implementation process of a possible DA revision.
The demand for a DA hike has been ongoing for several years, with state government employees pushing for parity with central government rates. According to employee unions, the DA gap between the Centre and the state is substantial. The matter is currently sub judice, pending in the Supreme Court. Employees have been agitating over the pending dues, and have repeatedly raised the issue with the government.
Sources close to the development said the government recently reviewed its financial situation and considered the feasibility of increasing the DA. While no official confirmation has been given yet, internal discussions suggest that the announcement could come anytime next week. The timing of the decision coincides with recent political developments, including the conclusion of the Lok Sabha elections. All departments have reportedly been asked to prepare for the implementation process in case a decision is formally declared.
