After incidents of suspected poisoning of stray dogs in Tiljala and Newtown, the West Bengal government has issued a directive mandating the inclusion of stray dogs in the mid-day meal programme. The order was issued by the West Bengal Samagra Shiksha Mission and will come into effect from Monday. It instructs schools to feed stray dogs living in and around the campus at least once daily.
According to the directive, the responsibility of feeding the dogs, ensuring their treatment, vaccination, and overall care will lie with schoolteachers and kitchen staff. The decision was taken following a request from animal rights activist and former Union Minister Maneka Gandhi. The order applies to all schools under the state’s mid-day meal scheme.
Several teacher organisations and individual teachers have objected to the move, stating that the existing budget is insufficient to provide adequate food even to students. They have raised concerns about the practicality of implementing the directive without additional funding or infrastructure.
