A major fire broke out at a paint factory and adjoining warehouses in the Bamunmura area under Kadambagachi Panchayat in Barasat, North 24 Parganas, around 9 PM on Saturday. At least 20 fire tenders from Barasat and surrounding areas were pressed into service to control the blaze, which continued to rage for over 14 hours. The exact cause of the fire is yet to be determined.
The fire spread rapidly due to the presence of large quantities of flammable materials used in paint production. Several houses located near the factory and warehouse were completely gutted. No casualties have been officially confirmed. The area was evacuated as a precaution while fire personnel worked in shifts through the night and into Sunday morning to control the flames.
Thick smoke covered the locality, visible from several kilometres away. Authorities are assessing the extent of damage and have indicated that a forensic investigation will be conducted to identify the source of the fire. The situation remained critical till Sunday morning as operations to fully douse the fire continued.
