A 36-year-old man, Suraj Maria, drowned in the Ganga River at Chandni Ghat under Halisahar police station limits on Monday night. He was a resident of R.N. Bose Garden Road in Ward No. 18 of Halisahar Municipality and worked as a temporary labourer at Hukumchand Jute Mill. According to his family, Suraj had gone to bathe in the river in an intoxicated state.
Witnesses and family members stated that he entered the river twice and returned each time. However, on his third attempt, he failed to come back. It is suspected that he was swept away by a strong current and drowned. The incident occurred around late evening, following which local authorities and the disaster management team began search operations at the site.
Search efforts have continued since Monday night, but his body had not been located at the time of reporting. Police have registered a case and initiated an investigation. Locals in the area reported a sense of shock following the incident. Authorities are continuing their operations along the stretch of the river near Chandni Ghat.
