Sikandar Azam, a 36-year-old resident of Kolkata, died on June 24 while undergoing treatment after he was allegedly abducted and assaulted on June 18 over a mobile theft allegation. He was first admitted to Kolkata Medical College and later shifted to a private hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries six days after the incident.
Following his death, local residents and members of the Ward Congress Party staged a protest outside the DC office on June 25. They demanded strict punishment for those responsible and called for the death penalty. Protesters raised slogans and demanded immediate arrests. The protest led to temporary disruption in the area.
Meanwhile, questions have been raised regarding police action in the case. Locals have alleged that police failed to intervene promptly or take action against the accused after the June 18 assault. Officials have stated that an investigation is underway, and a postmortem report has been prepared. Further legal proceedings are expected.
