A couple was found dead on Thursday morning after a mud wall of their house collapsed in Bishnurampur village under Kulpi police station area of South 24 Parganas district. The incident took place late Wednesday night when continuous rainfall reportedly weakened the structure of the house. The victims, identified as Shivprasad Mandal and his wife, were asleep when the wall caved in and buried them under debris.
According to local residents, the house was old and had walls made entirely of mud. Neighbours said the collapse occurred during the night, but no one noticed until morning. After spotting the debris, they informed police, who reached the site and retrieved the bodies from the rubble. The couple was taken to Diamond Harbour Medical College and Hospital, where doctors declared them dead.
Police have sent the bodies for post-mortem and started an investigation into the incident. Preliminary details suggest no external foul play. Locals also mentioned that several houses in the area are made of mud, raising concerns during the monsoon season. Authorities have not yet issued any official statement regarding relief or safety measures for similar structures.
