West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has raised objections to a new directive from the Election Commission requiring individuals born between July 1, 1987 and 2004 to submit a declaration form along with their parents' birth certificates for inclusion in the voter list. She said she has received two letters from the Commission regarding this matter. “Where will people get their parents’ birth certificates from?” she asked, adding, “I don’t know my parents’ birth dates. I only know the dates of their deaths.”
Mamata questioned the rationale behind this move, asking, “What is this? Is this NRC?” She further stated, “The Election Commission has gone rogue. This is a scam.” She also asked, “Is it even possible to prepare a new voter list again? When was Modi born?” She said the letters were also sent to Patna, but “Bihar is just an excuse, the real target is Bengal.” She alleged the Commission was acting “like a puppet under Shah’s instructions.”
She added that the Election Commission is taking decisions without consulting opposition parties and said, “The Commission is working on BJP’s instructions.” Mamata also said, “Every move by the Election Commission is dangerous for the country,” expressing concern over the demand for additional documents for voter list inclusion.
