The National Commission for Women (NCW) has taken suo moto cognizance of a deeply disturbing incident reported from Kolkata, where a law student was allegedly gang-raped within her college premises. The incident, involving two current students and a former student, has sent shockwaves through the city's educational circles, coming less than a year after a similar shocking case at RG Kar Medical College.
Hon'ble Chairperson Smt. Vijaya Rahatkar of the NCW has promptly addressed the matter, writing to the Commissioner of Police, Kolkata. In her communication, she expressed profound concern over the alleged crime and has issued a directive for an immediate and time-bound investigation under the relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Furthermore, Smt. Rahatkar emphasized the critical need to provide comprehensive medical, psychological, and legal assistance to the victim, along with due compensation as per Section 396 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS).
Kasba police have swiftly acted in the case, arresting three individuals suspected of involvement in the horrific crime. According to police sources, the accused include a former student and two employees of the same institute. The victim courageously detailed to the police that the assault occurred on the night of June 25, lasting approximately from 7:30 PM to 10:50 PM. Following her complaint, a rapid search operation led to the apprehension of two accused on June 26, with the third being arrested in the early hours of June 27.
The NCW has given the Kolkata Police a strict deadline, seeking a detailed action-taken report on the case within three days. This swift and decisive intervention by the national body underscores the gravity of the situation and the commitment to ensuring justice for the victim and enhancing safety within educational institutions.
