South Bengal gets new rail connectivity: Purulia-Bankura-Howrah MEMU service inaugurated today

In a significant boost to regional connectivity, a new MEMU (Mainline Electric Multiple Unit) train service connecting Purulia, Bankura, and Howrah via Masagram was virtually inaugurated today by Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav from Santragachhi station. The special train commenced its maiden journey from Purulia, promising enhanced convenience for thousands of daily commuters across South Bengal. The inauguration ceremony at Santragachhi also saw the presence of Union Minister of State Dr. Sukanta Majumdar and Howrah Sadar MP Prasun Banerjee.

The introduction of this new MEMU service is expected to significantly ease travel for passengers commuting between Howrah and Purulia, a route that previously required changes at points like Masagram. With this direct service, commuters from districts such as Bankura, and towns like Raniganj and Durgapur, will experience more streamlined and efficient journeys. The train's route through Masagram is particularly crucial as it serves as a key connecting station between Eastern and South Eastern Railways, eliminating the need for passengers from Bankura to change trains there.

According to railway sources, the inaugural train departed from Purulia at 1:30 PM today and is expected to reach Howrah by 9:30 PM. This initiative is a part of the Railways' ongoing efforts to strengthen regional rail networks and provide better facilities for passengers. The new service aims to reduce travel time and offer a more comfortable commuting experience, addressing a long-standing demand from the local populace.

While the inaugural service has begun, railway authorities are expected to release the complete timetable for regular services very soon. The addition of this MEMU train is poised to be a lifeline for various communities along its route, including those in Indas and Sonamukhi within Bankura district, as well as passengers on the Chord Line of the Howrah-Barddhaman section.
