A Chennai-bound Air India flight (AI 639) was forced to make a "precautionary air-return" to Mumbai on Friday night after a burning smell was detected inside the cabin shortly after takeoff. The flight, which departed from Mumbai at 10:55 PM, landed safely back at its origin airport, according to an Air India spokesperson.

Upon detection of the unusual odor, the flight crew promptly initiated the necessary safety protocols. An Air India spokesperson confirmed the incident, stating that the flight landed safely back in Mumbai. Following the safe return, an aircraft change was immediately initiated to minimize disruption for the passengers.

Air India emphasized that their ground colleagues in Mumbai provided all necessary support to passengers affected by the unforeseen event. The airline reiterated its commitment to safety, stating, "At Air India, the safety and wellbeing of our guests and crew remain top priority." Further details regarding the cause of the burning smell were not immediately disclosed.
