Sodepur flyover to shut every weekend from July 19 for urgent structural repairs
Two police personnel were killed in a road accident late Tuesday night in the Garughata area under Mahishadal police station limits in East Midnapore district. The deceased have been identified as Sub-Inspector Jayanta Ghoshal, who served as the Second Officer of Mahishadal police station, and constable Sheikh Sahana. A third officer sustained serious injuries and is undergoing treatment.
According to police sources, the incident occurred around midnight on National Highway 116 when the officers were on routine patrol duty. A dumper truck coming from the Haldia direction allegedly lost control and hit the police vehicle from behind. Due to the impact, the police jeep veered off the road and fell into a roadside waterbody. Locals rushed to the scene and assisted in the rescue operation.
The injured officers were taken to Mahishadal Block Hospital, where doctors declared SI Ghoshal and Constable Sahana dead. The dumper involved in the crash has been seized. A search is ongoing to trace the driver, who fled the scene after the accident. Police have launched an investigation into the incident.
