Mamata Banerjee, Omar Abdullah to hold high-stakes meet at Nabanna on July 10
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has raised objections after Uttam Kumar Brajabasi, a resident of Dinhata in Cooch Behar district and belonging to the Rajbanshi community, received a National Register of Citizens (NRC) notice from a Foreigners Tribunal in Assam. According to Banerjee, Brajabasi has been living in Bengal for over 50 years and has already submitted valid identity documents.
In a public statement, Banerjee said, “I am shocked and deeply disturbed to learn that the Foreigners Tribunal in Assam has issued an NRC notice to Uttam Kumar Brajabasi... Despite furnishing valid identity documents, he is being harassed on suspicion of being a ‘foreigner/illegal migrant.’” She described the notice as “nothing short of a systematic assault on democracy” and claimed that it reflected an attempt to implement NRC in West Bengal.
The Chief Minister called for unity among all Opposition parties and said, “This alarming situation calls for urgent unity among all Opposition parties to stand up against BJP’s divisive and oppressive machinery.” She also said Bengal would not remain silent “as the constitutional fabric of India is torn apart.”
