A photograph of Jamuria’s Trinamool Congress MLA Hareram Singh’s 14-year-old grandson holding a rifle has gone viral, prompting sharp reactions from opposition leaders and a police response. In the image, the boy is seen wearing sunglasses and holding what appears to be an automatic rifle while sitting with one leg raised. The boy’s age has been confirmed by Singh as below 15.
MLA Hareram Singh responded to the controversy, stating, “I am currently outside Bengal, in Hyderabad for medical treatment. I’ve heard the photo is circulating. My grandson is not yet 15. The rifle is mine and has a valid license. The photo is from an earlier time and was mistakenly uploaded on social media.” He also added, “It was not right to post the picture.”
BJP MLA Laxman Ghorui criticised the incident, saying, “It is not unusual for a TMC MLA’s grandson to be seen with a firearm. They introduced the culture of guns and bombs in Bengal. But handing a rifle to a child is absolutely wrong. This incident should be investigated.” Congress district president Debesh Chakraborty remarked, “This reflects arrogance. Even if an MLA owns a licensed weapon, how can he let his minor grandson hold it?”
Asansol DC (Central) Dhruva Das said, “We will investigate the matter. We currently have no information about it.” The police are expected to begin inquiries into the photograph and circumstances under which the rifle came into the minor’s possession.
