Congress protests outside IIM Calcutta over rape allegation, denied entry by authorities

A protest was held outside IIM Calcutta on Saturday by Congress leaders following the alleged rape of a female student inside the boys’ hostel. The protestors claimed they were denied entry when they attempted to meet the institute’s director. As a result, they sat at the main gate and raised slogans demanding accountability. Congress leader Ashutosh Chattopadhyay led the demonstration and alleged an attempt was being made to suppress the incident.

According to the complaint, the accused, a second-year management student, called the female student to the hostel on the pretext of a counselling session. The two had reportedly come into contact via social media. The girl was not made to sign the visitor register. It has been alleged that she was given pizza and a drink suspected to contain sedatives. She lost consciousness, after which the assault took place. She also alleged she was beaten when she regained consciousness and protested.

Police from Haridevpur station arrested the accused and registered a case under multiple IPC sections. Samples were collected from the scene, and questioning of IIM Calcutta officials is ongoing. Congress demanded an inquiry into how the girl was allowed into the boys’ hostel without being stopped and called for the role of campus security to be examined.
