The Indian Institute of Management Calcutta has confirmed that one of its students has been taken into police custody following a serious complaint. According to the official statement issued on 12 July 2025 by Director-in-Charge Prof. Saibal Chattopadhyay, the complainant is not affiliated with the institute. The administration stated that it is fully cooperating with the police, who are conducting the investigation.
The institute stated, “We are treating this matter with the utmost seriousness and are fully cooperating with the law enforcement authorities, who are currently conducting an investigation.” It also confirmed that the legal process is underway and the individual concerned is now in police custody. The administration emphasized that institutional protocols are being followed.
IIM Calcutta affirmed its zero-tolerance policy for such incidents and reiterated its commitment to ensuring a safe and respectful campus environment. “The Institute is committed to ensuring that due process is followed while safeguarding the dignity, safety, and privacy of all individuals involved,” the statement read.
The administration said it will continue to monitor the situation closely and take appropriate action in alignment with the law and internal policies. “We urge everyone to avoid speculation or dissemination of unverified information which might lead to further confusion and hamper investigation,” the statement added. The institute said it will not comment further during the ongoing investigation.
