A 12-hour bandh called by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in West Bengal’s Khejuri area on Monday led to clashes with police, road blockades, and disruption of daily life. The bandh was in protest against the deaths of Sujit Das (23) and Sudhir Chandra Paik (65), which occurred on Friday night in the Janka area during a Muharram event.
According to BJP leaders, including Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari, the two men were allegedly beaten to death by seven individuals, including a local Trinamool Congress leader. In contrast, the police stated that both men died after being hit by a halogen light that fell from a lamp post. Officials said there were no signs of assault or weapon-related injuries on the bodies.
Protesters blocked roads by felling trees and placing obstructions at various points. Clashes broke out when police tried to remove the blockades, leading to the arrest of eight individuals. During the unrest, several vehicles, including a truck, were vandalized. A large police presence was deployed across the area to maintain order and prevent further escalation.
Shops remained closed and public transport services were significantly affected. BJP MP Shantanu Pramanik stated that the bandh was widely supported by the people. Suvendu Adhikari conducted a march in the area demanding that murder cases be filed against those named in the complaint. BJP workers also alleged that police were harassing local residents during the protests.
