IIM Calcutta rape accused drugged woman with sleeping pills in cold drink, say police

Kolkata Police on Monday said the accused in the IIM Calcutta boys’ hostel rape case had purchased sleeping pills from a nearby pharmacy and mixed them in cold drink and water before giving them to the woman. The woman had visited the accused at the boys’ hostel for counselling. Police stated that after consuming the drink, the woman went to the hostel room where the alleged incident took place.

Officials said that after the incident, the accused made a phone call to one of his friends and described the sequence of events. During this time, he was seen walking outside the hostel room in the corridor. Police are in possession of relevant footage and call records and are examining them as part of the investigation.

Police further stated that the woman identified herself as a psychologist but failed to provide any valid certificate or documentation to confirm her qualification. She did not mention which institution she studied at, nor did she provide details of her clinic or work location. Officials are verifying her claims and cross-checking available records.

Investigators also said that there were discrepancies in the statement given by the woman’s father. The police are examining whether any pressure was exerted on the family to change their version. Authorities are also checking for any financial transactions linked to the case. A nine-member Special Investigation Team has been formed under the leadership of the Assistant Commissioner of the South West Division to handle the probe.
