Tesla arrives in India with showroom in Mumbai, cheapest car at 60 lakh | Check price list

Electric vehicle (EV) giant Tesla is officially marking its grand entry into the Indian market today, Tuesday, by opening its first showroom in the country. Situated at Maker Maxity Mall in Mumbai’s prominent Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC), this move represents a monumental step for Elon Musk’s company, as it formally ventures into one of the world's most rapidly expanding EV markets, signaling its long-awaited commitment to the Indian subcontinent.

The 4,000-square-foot showroom in Mumbai is poised to become Tesla’s primary display and customer experience center. It offers prospective buyers and enthusiasts an unprecedented opportunity to view Tesla vehicles up close, understand their cutting-edge technology, and engage with the brand's unique ethos. The strategic location in BKC underscores Tesla's intent to target a discerning clientele in India's financial capital.

According to reports, the monthly rent for this prime showroom space is a staggering Rs 35 lakh, reflecting the premium real estate market in Mumbai and Tesla's investment in establishing a strong physical presence. This significant expenditure highlights the company's confidence in the Indian market's potential for electric vehicle adoption.

Tesla's official website confirms that the company will kickstart its Indian journey with the Model Y SUV. The rear-wheel-drive variant of the Model Y is priced at Rs 60 lakh (approximately $69,765) for cash customers, while the long-range rear-wheel-drive version comes with a higher price tag of Rs 68 lakh. These prices are notably higher than Tesla’s base pricing in other international markets, such as the U.S. ($44,990), China (263,500 yuan), and Germany (45,970 euros). The primary reason for this elevated pricing in India is attributed to import duties, as the Model Y will initially be sold as a Completely Built Unit (CBU).

The Model Y units destined for India are expected to be imported from Tesla’s Gigafactory in Shanghai, which serves as a major production hub for many of the company's international markets. So far, Tesla has imported six Model Y SUV units into India, which are anticipated to be utilized for display and test drives at the new Mumbai showroom, allowing customers a hands-on experience before purchase.

Beyond vehicles, Tesla has also brought in Supercharger equipment and various accessories valued at nearly $1 million into India, primarily sourced from China and the United States. These Superchargers are likely to be installed strategically in and around Mumbai, aiming to build a robust charging infrastructure to support early adopters of the brand and facilitate seamless long-distance travel for Tesla owners. This infrastructure development is critical for accelerating EV adoption in India. The Mumbai showroom is widely expected to be the first of several locations Tesla may establish across India, with further expansion contingent on the market's response.

To complement its sales operations, the company is also setting up a dedicated service center in Kurla West, Mumbai, to provide comprehensive maintenance and after-sales support for its vehicles, ensuring a complete customer ecosystem. This expansion builds upon Tesla's existing footprint in the country, which includes a registered office in Bengaluru and an engineering hub in Pune, demonstrating a phased and strategic approach to entering the Indian automotive landscape. The launch has been preceded by a social media buzz, with Tesla's India-specific X (formerly Twitter) handle posting a "Coming soon" teaser on Friday, hinting at the July 2025 debut.
