A 15-year-old minor girl was publicly set on fire with petrol in the middle of the road in Odisha. The perpetrators carried out the heinous act without fear, and no arrests have been made so far. Reacting to the incident, Trinamool Congress spokesperson Shashi Panja strongly criticised the ruling BJP, saying, “That girl is currently hanging between life and death… her condition in the hospital is extremely critical. But the question is — is this the kind of safety daughters get under the ‘double-engine government’?”
Panja also questioned the silence of national agencies. She said, “Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao… is this the reality behind that slogan? When girls are being burnt alive under your own government and you remain silent, people will question you.” The incident, which took place just 500 metres from the girl’s home, has sparked public outrage, with many highlighting the failure of law enforcement in a BJP-ruled state. The National Commission for Women has not issued any statement yet.
