Two young men died in a road accident early Monday in North 24 Parganas’ Madhyamgram. The incident took place around dawn on Kazi Nazrul Islam Sarani, when a high-speed fish-laden pickup van collided with a motorcycle. The collision resulted in the death of 25-year-old S.K. Kasid on the spot. The other rider, Ziarul Rahman, was seriously injured and admitted to a private hospital, where he later died during treatment.
Following the accident, the pickup van overturned due to the impact. The driver and helper of the vehicle fled the scene, leaving the van behind. As news of the accident spread, tension escalated in the area. Locals gathered in large numbers and blocked the Jessore Road, disrupting vehicular movement. Protesters also vandalised a nearby traffic police booth during the agitation.
With the situation worsening, a large police force from Barasat Police District, along with senior officers, arrived at the location. Authorities managed to control the crowd and clear the blockade after several hours. Police have registered a case and initiated an investigation to identify and locate the absconding driver and his assistant.
