A businessman from South Dinajpur was critically injured after being shot by unidentified assailants near Kartipara More on National Highway 512 late Monday night. The victim, identified as Manojit Sarkar, a resident of Buniadpur, was returning home after a day of trading in Gazole when the incident occurred. He was driving a small four-wheeler and was carrying a bag containing cash collected during the day.
According to police sources, the incident took place around 9 PM when four armed individuals on two motorcycles began following Sarkar from Mehedipara in Harirampur police station area. As he reached Kartipara More, the assailants opened fire at the vehicle. Bullet holes were found on the car window, and the businessman was shot in the neck, shoulder, and back. He collapsed inside the vehicle after the attack.
Sarkar was rescued and taken to Gazole State General Hospital for initial treatment. Due to the severity of his injuries, he was referred to Malda Medical College Hospital. Hospital authorities confirmed that he sustained at least two bullet wounds — one near the right ear and another below the right shoulder. His condition is reported to be critical, and a surgical procedure is being prepared.
Police have launched an investigation into the incident. Preliminary findings indicate that at least five rounds were fired. A cash-filled bag was reported stolen during the incident. Investigators are examining whether the shooting was motivated solely by robbery or if other factors were involved. Identification and arrest of the attackers are underway.
