A sudden road cave-in was reported late Saturday night near the Allen Park signal in Kolkata’s busy Park Street area. A large portion of the road surface collapsed, forming a deep crater capable of engulfing half a person’s body. The incident occurred during low traffic hours, which likely prevented a serious accident. Eyewitnesses were shocked to see the gaping pit, and civic officials were soon alerted. Barricades were installed around the danger zone and repair work was initiated swiftly. The cause of the collapse is suspected to be underground water seepage or pipeline failure.
The incident has once again raised concerns about the ageing infrastructure in one of Kolkata’s busiest commercial zones. Residents and commuters have demanded a long-term solution rather than temporary patchwork. Engineers from the Kolkata Municipal Corporation are expected to inspect the site and submit a detailed report.
