Border Security Force (BSF) personnel deployed along the India-Bangladesh international border in South Bengal seized 107.5 kilograms of ganja and 7.5 kilograms of silver ornaments in separate operations on Sunday. One smuggler was apprehended. Details of the actions were shared by BSF South Bengal Frontier officials on Monday.
In the first incident, BSF’s 67th Battalion personnel received intelligence inputs about possible smuggling activity near the Behera border outpost in Nadia district. Around 11:30 PM on Sunday, troops spotted six to seven individuals moving toward the border using jute fields as cover. When challenged, the suspects fled, taking advantage of darkness and thick vegetation. A search was conducted in the area, during which 40 packets of ganja hidden inside 13 sacks were recovered, weighing a total of 79.5 kilograms.
Separate follow-up actions on the same day resulted in the recovery of an additional 28 kilograms of ganja. With this, the total quantity of ganja seized in the region that day stood at 107.5 kilograms. The contraband was secured and handed over to the appropriate agencies for further legal procedures.
In a separate operation in North 24 Parganas district, BSF’s 143rd Battalion detained a smuggler at the Tarali border outpost. He was attempting to smuggle silver jewellery hidden inside the wheels of a motorcycle through the Nityanandakathi check post. Upon inspection, 7.5 kilograms of silver ornaments were found, valued at approximately ₹7.60 lakh.
The arrested individual and the seized items were handed over to the concerned law enforcement authorities. According to the Public Relations Officer of the South Bengal Frontier, BSF personnel are maintaining continuous border surveillance and acting on real-time intelligence to intercept illegal cross-border activities.
