Old building partially collapses near New Market area amid continuous rain in Kolkata

A portion of an old building at 24A Rani Rashmoni Road near New Market in central Kolkata collapsed on Tuesday. The incident occurred following several days of rainfall caused by successive low-pressure systems across the state. No injuries or casualties were reported. Police and officials from the Kolkata Municipal Corporation visited the site shortly after the collapse.

The building had earlier been declared dangerous by the civic body. According to officials, it was likely vacant at the time of the incident. Repair orders had already been issued for the structure, with prior notices stating the building was unfit for habitation until repairs were completed. Discussions are ongoing between the authorities and the property owner.

A similar incident had taken place in June at Bowbazar’s Srinath Das Lane, where a part of another old building collapsed during repair work, injuring a labourer. In both cases, the structures were identified as dilapidated and had been issued repair directives. Multiple buildings in Kolkata have been declared unsafe and are under monitoring by the civic authorities.
