Five people, including a lawyer, have been arrested by Narayanpur police for allegedly cheating a man of ₹2 lakh in the name of providing an ₹8 lakh loan. The arrests were made based on a complaint filed by Sayan Adhikari, a resident of Bally in Howrah. He alleged that the accused took money from him in several installments as processing fees, NOC charges, GST, and verification expenses.
According to the complaint, on July 23, Adhikari visited the accused to demand a refund. He was allegedly locked in a room and forced to write a letter of apology. Later, he received between 30 to 40 phone calls, which he described as threatening. Following this, the police registered a case and initiated an investigation.
All five accused were produced before the Barrackpore court, where police sought and obtained their custody for interrogation. Officials confirmed that one of the arrested persons is a practicing lawyer. Police said they are questioning the accused to gather more details about the fraud operation and to identify if others are involved.
