Padma Shri and former ICAI President T N Manoharan dies of heart attack in Mumbai

T N Manoharan, Padma Shri awardee and former president of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI), passed away in Mumbai on Wednesday, July 30. He was 68. According to ICAI member Dinesh Wagerah, Manoharan died following a massive heart attack. His death was also confirmed by several members of the accounting and finance community.

Manoharan served as the president of ICAI during 2006–07. He held various significant positions including Chairman of the Accounting Research Foundation of ICAI and the National Committee on Accounting Standards of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII). He was a board member of the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) during 2006–07 and contributed to multiple committees of key government and regulatory institutions.

He was also associated with the Reserve Bank of India, Securities and Exchange Board of India, Ministry of Corporate Affairs, Comptroller and Auditor General of India, and the Central Board of Direct Taxes. At the time of his death, he was serving on the board of the Mahindra Group and had formerly chaired the board of IDBI Bank.

Former Union Minister Suresh Prabhu posted, “Deeply saddened by the sudden demise of my very good friend Padma Shri CA. T.N. Manoharan, former President of @theicai and an esteemed member of the Board of @MahindraRise. A distinguished professional and a man of great integrity, his contributions to the nation and the profession will always be remembered. Heartfelt condolences to his family. Om Shanti.”

Dinesh Wagerah said, “Big loss to CA fraternity. It’s saddening to know the news of the sudden and untimely passing of our beloved past president of ICAI, Padma Shri CA. T.N. Manoharan, earlier today in Mumbai following a massive heart attack. CA. Manoharan was not only a towering figure in our profession but also a true statesman of our nation.” He added that Manoharan's “wisdom, humility, and unwavering integrity inspired generations of Chartered Accountants.” Manoharan received the Padma Shri, India’s fourth-highest civilian award, in 2010.
