PM will offer Anjali to Maa Durga this Ashtami in Kolkata, receives multiple invitations
A portion of a century-old abandoned building near Dasani Studio in South Kolkata’s Regent Park area collapsed around 9:00 AM on Thursday due to continuous heavy rainfall. The structure, believed to be from the East India Company era, had been declared unsafe and abandoned, but was still inhabited by six families and some homeless individuals.
Despite prior eviction notices issued by the Kolkata Municipal Corporation, the residents had not vacated the premises, citing lack of alternative housing. At the time of the collapse, most occupants were reportedly asleep, but all were safely evacuated. No injuries or casualties were reported. The area has been cordoned off and debris removal has begun.
State minister Aroop Biswas and the local councillor visited the site following the incident. Biswas assured the affected families of immediate rehabilitation and future housing assistance. Structural assessments of nearby buildings are underway to prevent further risks.
