Left, BJP push Calcutta HC to stop ₹1.10 lakh Durga Puja grant by Bengal Govt

The West Bengal government’s decision to give ₹1.10 lakh to each Durga Puja committee this year has drawn fresh legal opposition. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee recently announced the enhanced grant, which will be provided to all registered Puja committees across the state. The scheme, implemented annually, involves financial support from the state exchequer ahead of the festival.

Left leader and Rajya Sabha MP Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharyya said on Friday that he will move the Calcutta High Court again against the grant. “We had earlier filed a petition and the case is still pending. We will raise the issue again,” he said. He questioned the use of public funds for religious purposes and plans to seek a judicial order to stop the scheme.

The BJP has also raised objections and is supporting the legal move. The Durga Puja grant has faced multiple petitions in the past, but the High Court has not issued any order staying or cancelling the disbursal. The matter is expected to come up in court again in the coming days.
