India Post to merge 'Registered Post' with 'Speed Post' from September 1

The Department of Posts (DoP) has announced that its long-standing Registered Post service will officially be merged with Speed Post from September 1, 2025. The move, communicated through an internal circular, marks the end of one of India Post's oldest and most relied-upon services, aimed at modernizing postal operations and enhancing customer convenience. The new unified framework is expected to streamline mail services and improve tracking mechanisms.

The merger will see Registered Post, which was traditionally known for its secure and addressee-specific delivery, folded into the faster and more technologically advanced Speed Post service. While Registered Post was slower but more affordable, Speed Post prioritizes time-bound delivery with robust tracking features. A key point of the merger is that the essential security features of Registered Post, such as proof of delivery and addressee-specific delivery, will be offered as a value-added feature within the new, combined service, with pricing details still being finalized.

To ensure a seamless transition, Dushyant Mudgal, DDG (Mail Operations), has directed all concerned departments to review and update administrative instructions, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and other documents to remove or replace references to 'Registered Post'. The directive emphasizes the need for all changes to be finalized well in advance of the September 1 deadline. The initiative is a strategic move to better compete with private courier services and create a more efficient, customer-friendly postal system for the digital age.
