No eviction drive in Burrabazar & College Street, clarifies KMC Commissioner
A structurally unsafe balcony at the Hawkers Market on Hazra Road in South Kolkata was demolished by the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC). The civic body identified the portion as severely damaged and posing a risk of collapse, especially during the ongoing monsoon season. The demolition was carried out as part of KMC's precautionary measures following routine inspections in vulnerable zones.
According to officials, the recent rainfall has led to water seepage and weakening of multiple old structures in various parts of Kolkata. The affected balcony had become unstable and could have collapsed without prior warning. Based on the assessment, the KMC’s building department decided to dismantle the damaged part immediately to avoid any potential danger to vendors, pedestrians, and nearby structures.
The civic body has intensified its structural audit campaign in the city, particularly focusing on aging buildings in commercial and residential zones. Officials stated that similar actions are being taken in other locations where structural damage has been identified. The aim is to remove hazardous components in time and ensure safety during the monsoon months.
