Heavy rain alert in Bengal, flood risk in North as Teesta swells

Several districts of South and North Bengal are likely to witness continued heavy rainfall till August 10. Alerts have been issued for Kolkata, Howrah, and Hooghly, where thunderstorms with light to moderate rain and wind speeds reaching 30 to 40 kmph are expected. Lightning activity is also anticipated in some areas.

Along with Kolkata, the forecast includes persistent rainfall in North 24 Parganas, South 24 Parganas, and Paschim Medinipur over the coming days. Intermittent spells of rain accompanied by gusty winds may lead to water accumulation in low-lying zones and cause local disruptions.

In North Bengal, heavy rainfall has been predicted in Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Alipurduar, Cooch Behar, and Jalpaiguri districts. The Teesta River is already flowing above the danger mark. Combined with ongoing rainfall and water release from the Damodar Valley Corporation, low-lying regions are facing flood-like conditions.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has asked district authorities to maintain high alert and readiness. She has directed teams to be prepared for rescue and relief operations. Instructions have been given for close monitoring of vulnerable areas, especially around rivers and hilly terrain.
