Seven people have been arrested in connection with an attack on the convoy of West Bengal Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari in Cooch Behar. According to police, the arrests were made based on CCTV footage recovered from the area where the incident occurred. All the arrested individuals have been identified as supporters of the Trinamool Congress. The police stated that further investigation is underway, and the footage is being analysed for more leads.
Following the incident, a senior official from the Union Ministry of Home Affairs contacted Suvendu Adhikari on Tuesday night to gather full details of the attack and inquire about his health. BJP sources said that Union Home Minister Amit Shah also spoke to former BJP MP Nisith Pramanik regarding the matter. Later, a senior MHA official spoke directly to Adhikari. During the call, Adhikari said, "If I had not been travelling in a bulletproof vehicle, my life could have been at risk." He thanked the ministry for its response.
The Ministry of Home Affairs has expressed concern over the incident and is considering further strengthening Adhikari’s security. According to BJP sources, the ministry may seek a detailed report from the West Bengal Home Secretary. BJP leaders have pointed to recent incidents targeting party figures ahead of the Assembly elections and flagged the issue as serious.
